Not enough signatures so rezoning for more apartments at 35th Ave & Southern stands
All, it is with regret that I inform you that not enough registered City of Phoenix voters came out to sign our referendum petitions to try to stop the 275+ unit, high-density, 3-story apartment project at 35th Ave & Southern (south of Walmart).
I still believe the vast majority of people in Laveen are against the REZONING of our neighborhoods in order to build MORE apartments, but just didn’t take the time to sign. The only thing I can offer is that if my assumption is true, the next time (and there will be a next time) you see somebody carrying a clipboard and wearing a lime-green T-shirt with “I OPPOSE HIGH-DENSITY REZONING” on the back, stop and sign their petition and then tell your friends and neighbors to do the same. We, as a community, missed an opportunity to send a strong message to the Phoenix City Council regarding how our community gets developed. We all now have to live with this one.
You may also want to bookmark our website, www.preservelaveen.com to see what high-density rezoning case we will be fighting next. We’ll keep you posted.
If you are against the REZONING of Laveen neighborhoods in order to build MORE apartments, I encourage you to help us fight the next case. Contact us ahead of time so we can put you in our database. The next time we want to fight a REZONING case we will only have 30 days to collect roughly 13,000 signatures (a near impossible task without lots of preplanning). We need to prepare now as a community for that fight. Spread the word. We’ll need volunteers and contributions. Jen and I can no longer continue to foot the bill for these referendum drives ourselves. For those who didn’t think they needed to sign a referendum petition because they thought enough other people would - OOPS.
I would like to personally thank the volunteer circulators who took so much time out of their own lives the past 30 days to try to preserve why so many of us moved to Laveen in the first place. We can only hope our City Council does not approve any more piecemeal REZONING of our Village to build high-density apartments.
Best regards,
Randy Jones
